Listed by mistake: challenging wrongful credit-bureau reports
Credit Reporting · May 2026 · 5 min

Wrongful credit-bureau listings are among the most damaging failures in consumer credit: a single erroneous record can lock a consumer out of formal finance for years. Community advocates report clients listed for loans they never took — sometimes over a single digit mistyped in an ID number.
Dispute mechanisms exist, but they run on evidence, and consumers rarely have any. Lender-provided records are, by definition, the very documents under dispute.
A certified variance report inverts that power dynamic: consumer-side data, independently reconciled, logged in a tamper-evident audit trail, formatted for regulators and bureaus to act on.
