Checkoff loans: the over-deduction problem nobody is auditing
Payroll-Deducted Credit · Jun 2026 · 7 min

Payroll-deducted — or 'checkoff' — lending is one of the largest credit channels in emerging markets. Employers administer repayments on behalf of lenders, deducting from salaries each month. It is efficient, but it creates a three-party trust problem: the lender reports balances, the employer deducts, and the consumer hopes the two agree.
Deductions continuing after loan completion is the single most common failure mode we see in pilot interviews. Balances drift, completion dates slip, and employees discover the error months later — if they discover it at all.
An independent verification layer reconciles three sources — contract terms, lender statements, and payroll records — and certifies any variance. Employers reduce dispute risk; consumers gain a verifiable completion date; lenders get cleaner reconciliation.
